Peaca an tSinsir (1996)

Pádraig Ó Siadhail, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia

The tranquil existence of John Berry, a retired academic, and his Polish-Canadian wife is unsettled by the shadows of ancestral transgressions. In this gripping murder mystery, John, once a professor of English at Ollscoil na mBunchnoc in British Columbia, finds his lustful ways catching up with him and instead finds escape in early retirement. With the ample time this offers him, he begins to delve deeper into his passion for literary and strange murders.

Yet, as John immerses himself in the investigation of a centuries-old murder linked to his own ancestors in Co. Derry, Ireland, the boundaries between past and present blur and the weight of familial sin casts a long shadow. Through labyrinthine twists and turns, the narrative unfurls, revealing how the sins of the father reverberate through generations, threatening to engulf John.

As he grapples with the echoes of the past, John confronts not only the mysteries shrouding the murder but also the darker corners of his own soul, where desire and obsession collide with the inexorable march of fate.
